Summary
If GibbsCAM displays the error:
VMM Could Not Load
the selected Virtual Machine Model (VMM) cannot be found or loaded. This is typically caused by the selected machine type referencing a VMM that is missing, not installed, or incompatible with the current GibbsCAM installation.
This article explains how to verify the selected machine type, confirm that the required VMM is installed, and redeploy the machine files if necessary.
Table of Contents
Before You Begin
Close any open part files before changing machine definitions.
Administrator permissions may be required to copy files into the All Users VMM folder.
If you have the original machine package (.zip), keep it available for redeployment.
Symptoms
You may experience one or more of the following:
GibbsCAM displays VMM Could Not Load during startup or when opening a part.
A machine cannot be selected.
Machine Simulation is unavailable.
The error occurs after upgrading to a newer version of GibbsCAM.
The error appears after opening a part that uses a custom machine.
Procedure
Step 1 – Verify the Selected Machine Type
The error may occur because the currently selected machine references a VMM that is unavailable.
Open Document Control.
Locate the Machine Type selection.
Select a different machine type from the drop-down list.
If you are not intending to use the machine associated with the error, selecting the appropriate machine type may immediately resolve the issue.
Step 2 – Verify the VMM Is Installed
If you intend to use the machine that generated the error, verify that its VMM file exists.
Open:
Plug-ins > Pathfinder > All Users VMM Folder
The default location is:
C:\ProgramData\Gibbs\GibbsCAM\<version>\VMM
Confirm that the required VMM file is present.
Step 3 – Redeploy the Machine Package
If you still have the original machine package supplied by CAMCO or your post processor provider:
Launch GibbsCAM.
Drag and drop the original .zip package onto the GibbsCAM window.
Allow the deployment process to complete.
The deployment package typically installs:
VMM file(s)
MDD file(s)
Post processor files
Related machine resources
Tip: Drag-and-drop deployment is the preferred installation method because it automatically installs all required machine components.
Expected Result
The complete machine package is redeployed successfully.
Step 4 – Install the VMM Manually
If the deployment package has already been extracted:
Open:
Plug-ins > Pathfinder > All Users VMM FolderCopy the required VMM file into the folder.
Restart GibbsCAM.
Expected Result
GibbsCAM locates the VMM during startup.
Step 5 – Copy the VMM from Another GibbsCAM Installation
If the machine works correctly in another installed version of GibbsCAM:
Open the All Users VMM Folder for the working version.
Locate the required VMM file.
Copy it into the corresponding All Users VMM Folder for the affected version.
Restart GibbsCAM.
Note: This should only be done when the machine definition is intended to be compatible with both GibbsCAM versions.
Expected Result
GibbsCAM successfully loads the selected Virtual Machine Model without displaying the VMM Could Not Load error.
Additional Information
What Is a VMM?
A Virtual Machine Model (VMM) defines the machine model used by Machine Simulation. Custom VMMs are commonly distributed together with their corresponding:
MDD (Machine Definition Database)
Post processor
Supporting machine files
These components should be installed together to ensure proper operation.
Common Causes
This error is commonly caused by:
Missing VMM file.
Incorrect machine type selected.
Incomplete deployment of a custom machine package.
Upgrading GibbsCAM without reinstalling custom machine files.
Deleted or relocated VMM files.
Best Practices
Deploy custom machines using the original ZIP package whenever possible.
Store custom machine packages in a secure backup location.
Install custom machine packages separately for each GibbsCAM version.
Avoid manually copying individual files unless necessary.
Troubleshooting
Problem: The error only occurs with one specific machine.
Possible Causes
Missing VMM.
Corrupted machine package.
Resolution
Redeploy the original machine package or reinstall the required VMM.
Problem: The machine works in another version of GibbsCAM.
Possible Causes
The VMM was not installed in the current version.
Resolution
Redeploy the machine package or copy the VMM into the current version's All Users VMM folder.
Problem: The error appears after upgrading GibbsCAM.
Possible Causes
Custom machine files were not migrated.
The new version does not contain the required VMM.
Resolution
Reinstall the complete custom machine package for the new GibbsCAM version.
