Summary

This article explains why the Record Video button may be missing from the GibbsCAM Simulation control window and how to restore the required Windows media support. In affected GibbsCAM releases, the button is available only when the workstation exposes at least one supported video encoder through Microsoft Media Foundation (MMF). If GibbsCAM detects no supported encoder, the Record Video button is hidden.

Table of Contents

Applies To

  • Affected GibbsCAM releases that use Microsoft Media Foundation for Simulation video recording.

  • Windows 10 and Windows 11 workstations. The Media Feature Pack installation steps apply only to Windows N editions.

Version note: This diagnosis originated with older GibbsCAM versions. Recording controls and supported output formats can differ in newer releases. If the steps below do not match the installed release, collect the exact GibbsCAM version and build before contacting CAMCO Technical Support.

Symptoms

  • The Simulation control window does not display the Record Video button.

  • Other Simulation controls are present and simulation playback works normally.

  • The same GibbsCAM version may show the button on another workstation that has Windows media components installed.

Cause

Affected GibbsCAM versions query Microsoft Media Foundation for compatible video encoders. The Record Video button is hidden when no supported encoding type is available. This commonly occurs when Media Foundation is absent, when an N edition of Windows does not have the Media Feature Pack installed, or when required media components have been removed or disabled in a managed Windows image.

Legacy supported encoder identifiers: H264, WMV1, WMV2, WMV3, and WVC1.

Resolution

Step 1 - Confirm the Symptom

  1. Open GibbsCAM and display the Simulation control window.

  2. Confirm that the Record Video button is absent rather than hidden behind another palette, window edge, or display layout.

  3. Record the exact GibbsCAM version and build from the application information dialog.

  4. Close GibbsCAM before installing or repairing Windows media components.

Step 2 - Identify the Windows Edition

  1. Open Windows Settings.

  2. Go to System > About and locate Windows specifications.

  3. Read the Edition value. If the name includes N, continue with Step 3. If it does not include N, skip to Step 4.

Step 3 - Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N

  1. On Windows 11 N, go to Settings > Apps > Optional features, select View features beside Add an optional feature, and search for Media Feature Pack.

  2. On Windows 10 N, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Optional features > Add a feature and locate Media Feature Pack.

  3. Select Media Feature Pack and complete the installation. Administrator access or assistance from the organization's IT department may be required.

  4. Restart Windows after installation. Microsoft requires a restart even when Windows does not display a restart prompt.

Step 4 - Repair Media Support on a Non-N System or an Unresolved N System

  1. Install approved pending Windows updates, then restart the workstation.

  2. Ask the organization's IT department to confirm that Microsoft Media Foundation and Windows media codec components have not been removed or disabled by an operating-system image, optional-feature policy, or endpoint-hardening policy.

  3. Have IT repair the Windows media components through approved Windows servicing methods when they are damaged or missing.

  4. Do not use an unapproved third-party codec pack as the first repair. A codec pack may not register a compatible Media Foundation encoder and can introduce codec conflicts.

Step 5 - Restart GibbsCAM and Verify Recording

  1. After Windows has restarted, launch GibbsCAM again so it can enumerate the available media encoders during startup.

  2. Open the Simulation control window and confirm that the Record Video button is present.

  3. Create a short test recording and save it to a local folder where the user has write permission.

  4. Open the saved video and verify that it contains the expected simulation frames.

  5. If the button is still absent, contact CAMCO Technical Support with the GibbsCAM version and build, Windows edition and build, a screenshot of the Simulation controls, and the repair steps already completed.

Expected Result

After Windows exposes a supported Media Foundation encoder and the workstation and GibbsCAM have been restarted, the Record Video button appears in the Simulation control window. A short test recording can be created, saved, and played successfully.

Additional Information

  • Media Foundation is a Windows media platform used by applications for audio and video processing. The presence of a media player alone does not prove that a compatible encoder is available to GibbsCAM.

  • The Media Feature Pack is intended for Windows N editions. On standard Windows editions, the feature may not appear in Optional features because the media technologies are normally included with Windows.

  • The legacy identifier list describes the encoders checked by affected GibbsCAM releases. The formats exposed by a current Windows installation or newer GibbsCAM release may differ.

  • GibbsCAM should be closed and reopened after encoder changes. A full Windows restart is required after installing the Media Feature Pack.

Troubleshooting

  • Problem: Media Feature Pack does not appear in Optional features.

Possible Causes

  • The workstation is not running an N edition of Windows, so the N-edition feature is not applicable.

  • The Windows Settings path differs for the installed Windows release.

  • A managed-device policy blocks optional features or access to the Windows servicing source.

Resolution

Verify the Windows Edition value first. On a standard edition, do not attempt to install the N-edition pack; ask IT to inspect or repair the included Media Foundation components. On an N edition, search Windows Settings for Optional features and have IT allow the feature or provide the approved servicing source if it remains unavailable.

  • Problem: The Media Feature Pack is installed, but the Record Video button is still missing.

Possible Causes

  • Windows was not restarted after the feature was installed.

  • GibbsCAM remained open and did not enumerate the newly available encoders.

  • The Windows image or an endpoint policy still removes, disables, or damages Media Foundation components.

  • The installed GibbsCAM release uses different recording requirements.

Resolution

Restart Windows, launch GibbsCAM again, and recheck the Simulation controls. If the button remains absent, install approved Windows updates and have IT repair the media components. Then contact CAMCO Technical Support with the exact GibbsCAM and Windows build information.

  • Problem: The Record Video button appears, but the recording cannot be saved.

Possible Causes

  • The selected destination is read-only, unavailable, or protected by folder permissions.

  • The path or filename is invalid, or the drive does not have enough free space.

  • The selected encoder fails when the recording session starts or finishes.

Resolution

Save a short test to a local writable folder with a simple filename and confirm adequate free disk space. If the failure continues, record the selected format and exact error message, then send those details to CAMCO Technical Support.

  • Problem: A video file is created, but it is blank, incomplete, or will not play.

Possible Causes

  • The encoding session was interrupted before it finalized.

  • The playback application does not support the resulting legacy format.

  • The available encoder or Windows media component is damaged.

Resolution

Create a brief recording, stop it normally, and test it with a Windows playback application that supports the selected format. If multiple test files fail, install approved Windows updates, have IT inspect Media Foundation, and provide CAMCO with the test file format and recording steps.
